It Gets Better Fandom Project Friday 14 October, 2011
By now, you’ve probably heard of the It Gets Better Project, an Internet-based movement devoted to preventing suicide among LGBT youth by promoting the message that life will get better through supportive and inspirational video messages. The project, which was founded on September 21, 2010, now consists of more than 22,000 video submissions created by people of all ages and sexual orientations, including many celebrities.
You may be wondering: What does this have to do with The Hunger Games? Jenn, a semi-regular on the show, informed us recently that she and the rest of the Hunger Games Confessions crew are working on their own It Gets Better video. And they want you to be a part of it!
Here’s what they had to say about their project:
“There have been a number of recent LGBT suicides happening, and it’s terrible to hear about what those kids went through in their life to urge them to take their own lives. Some kids and adults don’t have any support for who they are and don’t know what acceptance feels like. With the recent movement of Paws Up for Jamey, a teen who took his life due to gay bullying at his school, the Gamemakers of Hunger Games Confessions thought it would be an amazing thing to join in. Our idea is that you can record a short video of yourself saying how there are people who accept others for who they are and how it will get better for those in the LGBT community. Later, you will be able to send in the video to us and we will mash the videos up to make a huge statement saying that we, the Hunger Games Fandom, support you for who you are and who you love.”
– State a short story about an experience you have had
– Talk about a friend’s experience (with their permission of course)
– Talk about how there are people who accept others for who they are
– Say how you’re always willing to be there for someone who needs help
– They would also like a few shots of the three finger salute
To get involved, upload your video to a personal YouTube account and/or save it and send it via email. All submissions must be sent to Jenn at email@example.com with the subject tag THG It Gets Better. There is currently no deadline, but please get your submissions in as soon as possible.
“Many LGBT youth can’t picture what their lives might be like as openly gay adults. They can’t imagine a future for themselves. So let’s show them what our lives are like, let’s show them what the future may hold in store for them.” – It Gets Better Project
