Review: 'The Unofficial Hunger Games Wilderness Survival Guide' Monday 20 May, 2013
After reading the Hunger Games trilogy for the first time and witnessing the adeptness with which Katniss handles herself in the wild, I (Savanna) was impressed. I also became more painfully aware than ever of my absolute lack of survival knowledge. I’ve only been camping once, I’ve never started a fire without a match, and I know next to nothing about edible plants. If I were a tribute in the Games and actually made it out of the initial bloodbath alive, I doubt I’d last very long on my own.
While I may not have to worry about being reaped, you never know when life will thrust you into a perilous situation that requires you to “live off the land” and tap into a limited number of resources. If, like me, you’ve been inspired by The Hunger Games to learn more about surviving in the wild, then you’re definitely going to want to pick up a copy of The Unofficial Hunger Games Wilderness Survival Guide. The author, Creek Stewart, is an avid outdoorsman, a survival skills teacher, and — of course — a Hunger Games fan. His info-rich guide is laced with references to the series, so even if you’re a total survival novice, you’ll find a lot of familiar ground.
What you’ll find inside: Creek’s guide is incredibly comprehensive but also concise enough to not be overwhelming. There are nine fully illustrated chapters covering shelter, water, fire, tools, hunting, gathering, first aid, navigation, and more. And in addition to general primitive survival skills, Creek also focuses on specific techniques shown in the Hunger Games trilogy. Want to prepare soup heated over rocks? He tells you how. Want to make Gale’s twitch-up snares? Covered. Wondering how to create your own natural camouflage like Peeta? You’ll be an expert after reading Creek’s step-by-step instructions. At the end of the book you’ll find an excellent list of survival kit resources and some at-home exercises that you can use to practice various skills as you learn them.
What makes it unique: While there are definitely a lot of unofficial Hunger Games companion books out there, none of them devote more than a few pages to the art of survival. The Unofficial Hunger Games Wilderness Survival Guide is the first of its kind and was written by an expert in the field. Also, I don’t know about you, but most survival guides that I’ve thumbed through have been very textbook-like and fairly daunting. Creek has transformed a complicated subject into an accessible, engaging, and potentially life-saving resource for fans of The Hunger Games.
Why you should read it: Because silver parachutes aren’t a guarantee, even in Panem. To quote from the book’s introduction: “Many people don’t prepare for the ‘what ifs’ in life. They don’t take time to learn survival skills that could one day bridge the razor-thin gap between life and death.” Everyone should be ready to expect the unexpected and ensure that the odds are in their favor.
Where to get it: You can purchase the book at Amazon by clicking here.
