All these photos have me very excited for the movie! I love how Peeta and Finnick have their tokens, but I would like to know why Katniss isn’t wearing her Mockingjay pin =(

  • The Vaultmaster says:

I don’t think words are sufficient to describe the majesty of the week us Hunger Games fans all had. These pictures are wonderful- and we’ve got glimpses of almost every ally at this point! We have the brilliant Jennifer, who looks as awesome as ever as Katniss, we have Josh Hutcherson as Peeta, who’s looking as dedicated as ever, Sam Claflin as Finnick, who had me a little disappointed when he was first cast, but now upon seeing him in Atlanta and now in Oahu, is looking to be the perfect man for the job and who looks like he really will impress. Lynn Cohen as Mags looks perfect for the role, and knowing her acting ability, seeing her death will be probably one of the most emotional scenes of the movie. Finally we got to see Jena Malone as Johanna- probably the picture that got me the most excited. I hoped her hair would be shorter but to be honest, I don’t really mind now I’ve seen her in costume. The axe, the trident, the bow, everything- they all look perfect.

One wonders how many days it’ll be until Beetee and Wiress make an appearance…

  • roci says:

I highly doubt they´re ditching the pin. Katniss is the Mockingjay after all. They´ll probably CGI it in post-production, or maybe it´s concealed as it was in the first movie, so you can´t see it but it´s there. As for the arena outfits, they are ok, but could have been better. Wetsuits aren´t flattering in general, but these would look much better without that grey pattern along the hips and legs, and those kneepads…don´t get me started on how much i dislike them. What are they for, anyway? I think they´d look much better if the lower part of the wetsuits were plain black.
On a fun note, I couldn´t help but notice that the wetsuits zip at the back. it must be kind of hard getting in and out of them. I bet they´ll be the subject of funny set stories when the actors start doing press for the movie.

  • Jane G says:

I’m guessing the scenes on the beach of the three of them happen after the fog incident , but they appear to be generally unharmed. Their suits are in perfect condition (except for the dark spot on Josh’s shoulder from what I assume is his run in with the force field). I wonder how they’re playing the fog or even IF they’re keeping that in at all. It seems too pivotal to scrap it, but it doesn’t seem like it affected them physically.

Also, it looks like Josh gets into it a little with the Dist 10 tribute at his pedestal. Maybe they didn’t like that Peeta just stands there helpless in the book?

    • Katie says:

Nice spotting with the D10 tribute! I didn’t recognise him and assumed (stupidly) that it was Sam Claflin’s stunt double.

I think it’s a good idea to make Peeta a little less helpless. He seems to need rescuing a lot in CF, so I agree with any small changes that’s going to make him seem a little more capable.

      • Jane G says:

Actually, I thought it was a stunt double at first too, then someone else pointed out to me that it might be another tribute. When I checked the cast list, I realized it was D10’s male tribute.

My husband was annoyed that Peeta would insist on going into the arena with Katniss when he’s more of a handicap to her than a help. I think seeing him fight a little more might justify that.

        • Savanna says:

I didn’t notice that either until someone pointed it out! The D10 tribute “boy”, Jackson Spidell, is a stuntman so he’s probably doing double duty as Sam’s double! :D

  • Kasey V says:

Just WOW about all of the pictures we have received! I was never expecting that we would be seeing this many in such great quality. I am in love with them and have even more faith with what is going on with filming.

I love the costumes. Glad they seemed to have pushed the envelope with them. It was also neat seeing the locket and bracelet. It is good to see that they are keeping those details. :D

Excited about the cast, they all look great. I just can’t wait to see them acting and being their characters in the film! :D

  • Katie says:

The pictures have been thrilling to look at. I admit I let out a squee of delight at the sight of Jena Malone and Sam Claflin in costume in particular. It’s also been nice to actually be able interpret what direction they’re going with the screenplay, sets, props and costumes etc. And what I’ve seen so far is very impressive. The weapons and the arena outfits look amazing.

If I am to nit pick (and let’s face it, that’s what we’re here for :D ) I am also worried about the missing Mockingjay pin. Seeing as it is the symbol of the revolution, it’s not something I want hidden away or brushed over. I also hope Johanna has another axe that’s a bit bigger. The one she has looks more like a hatchet, which is fine, as long as there’s something a little more bad-ass as well. :)

BTW Lynn Cohen looks incredible standing there on those rocks in her wetsuit and trident in hand. I love her already.

  • Michael says:

I want to echo what Jane G said above about being confused about the scene on the very small beach where Jenn, Josh and Sam are sharing a meal. I went back and re-read that part of Catching Fire and this is to my mind clearly from the point in the book just after Mags has died and they are recuperating from the “fog” with a meal that has been caught by Finnick. The monkeys and Johanna/Wiress/Beetee have not appeared yet. If that is the case, the three of them look in way better shape than they should at this point. Their uniforms should be all scuffed or ripped up but they (particularly Jennifer) look essentially identical to when we see Jennifer jump off her pedestal earlier this week. There are a couple of possible reasons for this. The movie could have a bit of a different order of the plagues that the tributes encounter or some of them have been dropped. However, you still have to contend with Mags death because she is nowhere to be seen on the beach. Or perhaps the fog impacts their nervous system like it is described in the book but has no impact on their actual uniforms. This avoids the problems with them having to go about in their “undergarments” which is what the book describes.

If the movie screws around with the order of the plagues, I am hoping that the monkeys are retained just to see how the CGI department on this movie compares to the wolves from the recent Twilight movies.

As well, we see Mags (or her stunt double) beside Jennifer and Sam while Jennifer has her bow and arrow out early this week. This I believe is the scene where she is “covering” for Finnick as he goes out to get Peeta (right after the arena scene begins). We have heard from a number of individuals who have indicated that the strips of land between the podiums are not made of sand in the movie but of rock which is what the three look like they are standing on. In the book, because it is a first person narrative, we don’t get to know about the interaction between Peeta and Finnick when Finnick approaches Peeta at his podium but there is no description of there being any other tribute there or an altercation. There is internet footage of an altercation between Peeta and the District 10 tribute which is not described in the book.

Does this mean (speculation here) that Finnick has to kill the District 10 tribute when he gets to Peeta’s podium? That would amp up the suspense/thrill of the early part of the arena scene (will Finnick get to Peeta before he is drowned by District 10?) so I am all for this minor change in the book.

Also, Johanna’s arrival in one picture also shows her uniform essentially in picture perfect shape. They (Johanna, Wiress and Beetee) have just been through the blood rain when they meet up with our leading threesome. Johanna’s hair is shaded red in the picture possibly to depict her encounter with the blood rain but again I would have thought her uniform would have changed somewhat.

Finally, on the internet there are a number of commentaries about the fact that in The Hunger Games Gary Ross ensured that each tribute looked slightly different in the arena to avoid us confusing them (they don’t have much screen time for us to get to know them during the training sessions) and in an attempt to give each one a bit of a different personality. It appears our new director has gone the opposite way as all of the tributes we have seen look identical (see the pictures of the District 10 tribute walking into the water beside Josh).

I myself will also echo what roci said above that I am not that thrilled with these uniforms and the knee pads. Why would the gamesmakers give them suits that protect their knees when the whole objective is to kill them off in the most spectacular way possible?

As well, in the launch room, Cinna has no idea what the clothing means for the arena that Katniss is about to enter (we have a very short piece of dialogue about this in the book). This, of course, makes no sense if all of the tributes come out of the shuttle wearing wetsuits.

Love the pictures though – can’t wait for November 2013.

    • Jane G says:

Lots of good points! I got the impression that Francis Lawrence was stepping up the “fantasy” of this movie from the first movie, but it almost feels like maybe they aren’t contending with the arena as much as they should. I know this is just a small sampling, but still.

Regarding the wet suits – keep in mind that very few of them have even been exposed to large bodies of water (more specifically, the ocean) where they would need such a thing as a wetsuit. The suit in the book is described by Katniss as jumpsuit, but if she’s never seen a wetsuit before, she wouldn’t have any other name for it.

      • Michael says:

        Hi there Jane
I agree completely that Katniss would have no obvious familiarity with a wetsuit because her low status would completely prohibit her from seeing the coasts or any large body of water.

However, I would think that Cinna, who is supposed to be a fashionista and from the Capitol, would likely be at least aware of the type of clothing one wears when going deep into the ocean or a large body of water. The society still inhabits North America where there are coast lines and also large lakes (Great Ones even). The transportation system that we see during THG appears to allow for long distant movement so people could visit these coasts and the lakes and therefore deep sea dive.

I guess I am perhaps still trying to figure out where the substantial differences between today’s society and this Panem lie. Perhaps due to security concerns no one has travelled to these places and so memory of the clothing used for deep diving has slowly faded. Or perhaps Suzanne Collins was describing more of a wet-look clothing style that is seen very commonly now. It is not particularly waterproof but looks like it could be.

We will all find out in due course when the real deal comes to the cinema in about one year.

  • Sarah says:

I think that all of the characters look really great! It was kind of cool to get a glimpse into the Catching Fire arena. Maybe the reason that they don’t appear to look too tattered or banged up is because they were rehearsing the scenes? That could explain why we don’t see Beetee and Wiress with Johanna. Also I think it may be for the best that Johanna’s hair isn’t extremely short. It will be more shocking then in Mockingjay when it is all cut off.

  • Allison (The HungerJay) says:

Having read the books I was both amazed and disappointed by the arena suits. In the books they are described so diffrently, to the point where I thought it was a totally diffrent scene just for a moment, don’t get me wrong I still freaked out when these came out but you know. As far as Johanna, I think it’s pretty amazing, but where is betee and wiress? They are suposed to be trailing behind her! Ugh. Personal grief. But lastly about the shirtless josh picture :) who couldn’t want that lol

  • Satsuma says:

I’ve only let myself see a few of these photos, and I echo some of the concerns about the tributes looking not as worse for wear than we’d think from the book. However, I think I need to point out that these are NOT movie stills, and hence, what we see in these pics are likely to be a far cry from what we see in the actual movie. For example, there being a pic of Josh on the set with his shirt off, doesn’t mean he will appear that way in the movie.

This is one of the reasons I’ve become spoiler-averse, the risk of jumping to conclusions about CF based on these pics which I think is a little premature. It is possible that some of the “obstacles” like the poison fog and blood rain may be sanitized to fit the PG-13 rating, but I think much of this will involve CGI and other post-production tricks, so what we see in unofficial set photos is NOT going to be the same as what we get.

As for Peeta mixing it up with a D10 tribute; true that this is plausible as something that happened when Katniss wasn’t looking. I am also pretty sure at this point that Peeta’s confrontation with Brutus will indeed make it to the screen. And I can understand the reasons for showing this, to make Peeta out to be less of a “load”. I just hope that showing Peeta as a fighter, is not at the expense of developing other aspects of his character, such as his way with words, compassionate nature, sense of humor, etc.

  • grace says:

i think katniss and peeta are wet that’s why johanna’s outfit looks different.

    • Savanna says:

      Ooh, you might be right!

  • Great show! Finally got to listen to it today. Loved the discussion on the new set pictures. I’m curious to see if we get any more pictures or if this was just a one-time flurry.

    • Savanna says:

We’re curious, too! We’re thinking it was just a one-time flurry. The same thing happened in Atlanta…tons of paparazzi pics appeared online during the first few days of production…then it stopped. Very mysterious. ;P

  • Natalie says:

Just an input but maybe Johanna’s sleeves are shorter because it’s in between shots and it’s just hot so she rolled them up? Josh took his whole top off so maybe it’s that? And as someone else said, maybe Katniss and Peeta are wet or it’s lighting :D I might need to go check the pictures again though because I was listening on my way to work and thought i’d quickly write this now! Great show, guys!

    • Savanna says:

That’s a great theory Natalie! It really doesn’t seem likely that they’d give her a totally different outfit!
