#79 Fireside Chat: Peeta's Walking Stick Sunday 07 October, 2012

“Peeta’s Walking Stick”

If you missed Episode 79 LIVE, no worries! You can now listen to it recorded by clicking HERE or simply using the embedded player below. Enjoy!

Episode 79 of Hunger Games Fireside Chat will air live this Monday, October 8, at 10pm ET/7pm PT! This week, our panel of experts will include some of our fabulous friends from Down with the Capitol, Crystal from Mockingjay.net and FictionalFood.net, Rebekah from Victor’s Village, and Courtney from Welcome to District 12!

Before we get into our show agenda, we just want to remind you that you have one week left to enter to win a Catching Fire set visit. The contest closes this Friday (10/12), so be sure to go enter if you haven’t done so already! www.CatchingFireSweeps.com

So, what do we have planned for Episode 79?

– We’ll kick things off by chatting about the latest filming-related updates: the newest set photos and extras casting calls, etc.

– We’ll then discuss Jo Willems, the new cinematographer, and Danny Strong, who will — allegedly — be writing the scripts for both Mockingjay films (this is still a rumor at this point). Leave a comment below and let us know what you think about both Willems and Strong!

*We have been informed by Belinda M. that Jo’s name is actually pronounced like “Yo”! We apologize to Mr. Willems for sounding stupid and butchering his name.*

– To conclude, we make some “New Movie Observations” and talk about the sad Hob lady and Peeta’s walking stick. If you have any interesting observations to make (now that we’ve all seen the movie a billion times), leave a comment below!

You can chat with other listeners throughout the live show by using our hashtag #HGFiresideChat on Twitter! We recommend TweetChat to easily follow along with the conversation.

I think Peeta may have had a walking stick during that part of the movie but we were all so excited for the movie to come out that we didn’t notice the first 10 times we watched it. And in the theater it was the first time and we were all insane with joy we couldn’t even process. So now I shall watch you again, DVD.

Re set photos: Many people have griped about lack of continuity re the Peacekeeper uniforms. I think that’s nitpicking; who’s to say the Capitol doesn’t design new uniforms for the PKs every year? But I guess even minor changes can add up to poor continuity if they add up.

Re Danny Strong: Seems that he’d be good for getting the political side of MJ down, especially if they expand Coin’s role in the MJ movies in a similar way to how Snow’s role in THG was expanded on. But he can pull off the romance, especially considering his connections to Joss Whedon, who’s pretty infamous for NOT letting his characters have successful romantic relationships.

Now, the way Katniss and Gale “break up” may fit the Whedon mold. But Katniss and Peeta wind up settling down together and having kids. I want that to be a bittersweet but ultimately hopeful ending, and I’m not sure if Strong can pull that off.

Re Peeta’s Walking Stick: This screenshot seems to be circulating mostly on tumblr, with three popular theories: (1) Peeta DID lose his leg in THG, and this will be made definite in CF (2) Peeta was initially supposed to lose his leg but they cut that part of the story out, and that scene inadvertently slipped through the editing cracks (3) That’s not a walking stick handle, that’s just a microphone.

While this is intriguing, I hope they DON’T ret-con the story in CF to add back Peeta losing his leg. Because while it is true to the books, it’s not true to the movieverse, that showed the Capitol cream completely healing his leg wound, to the point where he can run from the mutts perfectly well, and cut out the part where the mutt chews up his left leg. So there’s no reason for Movie!Peeta to lose his leg. If they do that, they might as well change the whole Mockingjay pin story back to fit book canon, too.

There wasn’t a lot of information this week about catching fire 🙁

But the issue with Peeta leg was not really a problem, because it wasn’t a driving force in the story line , so I didn’t mind that hey took that part out.

I assuming the emotional scaring will be when they find him in Mockingjay. That is the interesting thing about dystopian societies. The atrocities the main characters try to run from is what eventually happens.

Prim eventually did die , and Peeta was changed by the them.

Just wanted to share my thoughts on this.

  • Adna (add-na) I AM A GIRL! says:

I acually dont see the stick part of the walking stick so maybe its a microphone. Or maybe the stick part is in front of him and i just cannot see it, if thats the case then maybe they had it in the movie but cut it out because there wasnt enough time and decided to just show it in catching fire. Or maybe peeta will just need a walking stick for a while and doent really lose his leg in the next movie. but these are theries and i guess we will find out next november.

  • Ivana says:

@Satsuma: Actually, the kidnapping of Peeta at the end of Catching Fire, just as it had become obvious Katniss had indeed fallen in love with him, and the hijacke!Peeta plot, is totally Whedonian.

Letting couples end up happy… well, if we believe Joss, he was going to do that with Wash and Zoe if Firefly had continued as a series.

Katniss and Gale’s…parting (can you “break up” when you were not together in the first place) is not very Whedon. The two of them would have to have been together, or at least likely to be together as a romantic couple, and that really wasn’t the case at any point in Mockingjay. Whedon uses tragedy to break hopeful couples apart, not to put the nail in the coffin of something that didn’t look like it was gonna happen anyway.

  • Tess says:

I feel that maybe Gary was originally going to make the ending of the movie more similar to the book, but maybe it just took too much time. However, even if this isn’t the case, he might not want to put full weight on his leg just yet. It did almost kill him after all! And besides, when they return home, wouldn’t it be more tragic with a cane?

P.S – I don’t think you can really see the can unless you stop your movie.

  • Dillon says:

Chris Terrio, Vanessa Taylor, and Drew Goddard are also rumored to write the script.

  • Satsuma says:

“Whedon uses tragedy to break hopeful couples apart, not to put the nail in the coffin of something that didn’t look like it was gonna happen anyway.”

I agree that the hijacked!Peeta part of MJ is “Whedonian”. But, I don’t see anything Whedonian about how they eventually settled down as a happy family at the end; and even if he did mean for Firefly to have a happy romantic ending, he never showed us he COULD write such an ending and have it believable. As for Gale and Katniss, I think there are still many Gale fans who DO think the way they parted was a case of how an author”uses tragedy to break hopeful couples apart” as opposed as just a final nail in the coffin.

  • Grace says:

Peeta’s walking stick looks like a nightstick. Maybe its to beat back the mob of people cheering for him. 😉

    • Savanna says:

      LOL!

  • Satsuma says:

Nice show today! Also, wanted to commend you guys for discussing Strong’s political movies in a very balanced way! I get the feeling THG fandom in general probably leans toward “blue” on the US political spectrum, but that’s not universal by any means, and many fans aren’t even from the US. I think you handled the political stuff very sensitively, and I also was impressed by how you realized that many THG fans would be too young to even recall the 2000 election recount.

    • Savanna says:

      Thanks, Satsuma!

  • Peeta’s losing his leg after the movie made light of his injury could be explained by the infection alleviated temporarily going into the bone, or he could have developed blood clots.
