#72 Fireside Chat: The DVD Release Sunday 19 August, 2012

“The DVD Release”

If you missed Episode 72 LIVE last night, you can click here to listen to it recorded or use the embedded player below!

Episode 72 of Hunger Games Fireside Chat will air live this Monday, August 20, at 10pm ET/7pm PT! This week, our panel of experts will include some of our fabulous friends from Down with the Capitol, Crystal from Mockingjay.net and FictionalFood.net, Sam Cushion, Tiffany from Victor’s Village, Courtney from Welcome to District 12, and special guest panelist Cassidy Tucker (a.k.a. CassJayTuck)!

Before we tell you what we have planned for Monday night, can we just pause a moment to acknowledge how incredible it is that The Hunger Games is now available on DVD and Blu-ray? The last year and a half seems to have passed in the blink of an eye — which is good, since that hopefully means the wait for Catching Fire won’t seem too long!

So, without further ado, here’s what we have on tap for Episode 72:

– We’ll start out by discussing Stephanie Leigh Schlund, our Cashmere! This announcement came last Tuesday and was — tragically! — the last bit of casting news we received all week. Leave us a comment and let us know what you think of Stephanie!

– Next, we’ll share our midnight DVD release party experiences since several of our panelists were able to interview some of the cast members at their Walmart appearances. Adam was lucky enough to interview Amandla Stenberg at Toys ‘R’ Us in Times Square on Saturday, so we’ll talk about that, too!

– We’ll spend the rest of the show talking about the DVD itself! Our main focus will be all of the incredible special features, so make sure you’ve watched them before you listen! That said, we will only be talking about the “standard” special features found on every DVD/Blu-ray: Game Maker, The World is Watching, Letters from the Rose Garden, Controlling the Games, A Conversation with Gary Ross and Elvis Mitchell, Propaganda Film, and Marketing Gallery.

So, leave a comment and tell us what your favorite special feature was and why. As always, we’ll try to share as many of your responses as possible on the show.

You can chat with other listeners throughout the live show by using our hashtag #HGFiresideChat on Twitter! We recommend TweetChat to easily follow along with the conversation.

  • Maia says:

I am curious if you guys will do a play by play of scenes from the movie,?such as what you did when the trailer came out. Or would that be to long in the show

  • Tess says:

I thought Stephanie Leigh Schlund as Cashmere was a great chose especially with Alan as her counter part.
I’d have to say that my favorite of the bonus features was ‘The World Is Watching’ not only because it took up most of the time on the dvd, but because it was so in depth. It covered everything from casting to sound editing, to negotiating the movie deal. It was amazing.

  • Emily414 says:

I’m with Tess on this one. I LOVED The World is Watching. It genuinely made me feel like I had an inside look at the making of the film. It was great to watch everything from Josh being told he was laying in “snake rock” to Jack, Amandla and others playing ninja tag to James Newton Howard recording the score to Elizabeth Banks and Gary Ross talking about how she fought for her role. It was amazing. I’m so glad they put it on the DVD.

  • ahmad says:

The special features were amazing especially the tribute diaries i got the dvd today for my birthday best gift ever!

  • David B. says:

My favorite was “Letters from the Rose Garden.” I loved how Donald Sutherland described his interpretation of President Snow. It really describes what makes Snow tick.

  • Emma says:

My favorite feature on the dvd would most likely be Controlling the Games or The World is watching. but i loved all of the features and im giving more credit to Gary Ross because now i know what direction he was going in and the fact that he put alot of effort into it…….unlike myself most times.

  • Miranda says:

Watching all of the behind the scenes really made me SO sad that Gary Ross is not coming back. He did so much to make this movie great and I hope Francis Lawrence can have half as much passion for the project as Gary did.

One thing I wish was included in the behind-the-scenes was an interview with Suzanne Collins herself. I know she is a private person, but I would love if she could give her thoughts.

  • Alison says:

One of my favourite parts of the special features was seeing just how many special effects were used in the movie. The buildings in The Capitol looked so realistic, especially during the chariot parade scene. PS. You should have Cassidy on every episode 🙂

  • My favorite bonus feature was definitely the World is Watching, it was so interesting!!

  • All of the special features are amazing! I feel like they really gave us a well rounded feel for what it was like making this film! Gary Ross had a clear vision for THe Hunger Games, and he will definitely be missed going forward!

  • I love stephanie as Cashmere I absolutely love her she is what i pictures for sure. I am so glad i finally hold my world in my hands having the dvd is the greatest thing in the world. I loved every feature, i really found the letters from the rose garden really intresting. I love the dvd so much and all of its features. my midnight release party experience was amazing i kicked major butt at trivia i got the very first copie of the dvd and i got a intercom shout out for my birthday witch was kinda embarrasing it was the most epic night of my life.

  • a shout-out to those of us who don’t have the DVD/blu-ray yet! (aw, boo).

i’d love to hear not only what your favorite special features were, but which parts of them specifically, if possible (it IS 3+ hours long, after all. i’m sure there were “slow” parts and stuff that was more exciting in comparison).
