#70 Fireside Chat: The Mags-nificent Lynn Cohen Sunday 05 August, 2012

“The Mags-nificent Lynn Cohen”

If you weren’t able to listen to Episode 70 LIVE, you can click here to listen to it recorded or use the embedded player below.

Episode 70 of Hunger Games Fireside Chat will air live this Monday, August 6, at 10pm ET/7pm PT! This week, our panel of experts will include some of our fabulous friends from Down with the Capitol, Crystal from Mockingjay.net and FictionalFood.net, Rebekah from Victor’s Village, Natalie from Crushable, Ariel of Nerdy, Wordy, and Almost Thirty.

– We’ll kick things off by talking about Lynn Cohen, our Mags! This casting announcement came last Thursday (8/2), and we’re pretty darn excited about it. Best known for playing MAGda (ha!) in Sex and the City, Lynn’s film and theatre background is pretty extensive. You can learn more about her here and watch a really cute interview with her here. Leave us a comment and let us know what you think of Lynn! We’ll share as many as we can during the show.

– We’ll also spend some time discussing the latest news concerning filming locations and schedules. In a recent interview with Ryan Seacrest, Josh Hutcherson not only confirmed that they will indeed be filming in Atlanta, but also that he’d be flying to Atlanta to start shooting in about two weeks. Woah! We’ll also address the Oahu rumor.

– After some super sleuthing, The Hob discovered that the working title for Catching Fire MIGHT BE The Idiom. We’ll chat about the evidence they uncovered and possible extras casting opportunities…

– Lastly, time permitting, we’ll weigh in on the “steamy” Crackpot Theory and impossible Cave, Marry, Kill that we skipped last week!

You can chat with other listeners throughout the live show by using our hashtag #HGFiresideChat on Twitter! We recommend TweetChat to easily follow along with the conversation.

  • Maia says:

Lynn Cohen also was on 2 episodes of Law and Order : SVU
    Season 11 episode titled Beef

She plays a really evil bad guy in that episode.

It will be hard to see her as sweet old Mags!

  • Debbie says:

Lynn is an ideal choice. I know a lot of people wanted Betty White, but she’s such an iconic figure I don’t think the audience would have been able to see past her persona. Lynn was fantastic as Magda on Sex and the City and she’s an accomplished stage actress. She will do a great job in this role.

  • Tess says:

What can I say Lionsgate? Seems like a great choice. She is a great known actress, but isn’t as much associated with one role (as other choices for mags were, such as Maggie Smith and Betty White). I can’t wait to see her make some fish hooks!
And this means we are only getting closer to our Finnick casting 🙂

  • Megan says:

Once again, Lionsgate and the CF team have made a great casting choice. After four great casting choices, I have complete trust in the casting for the rest of the film. And this proves that the “close to done deals” that various sites are reporting are not true because apparently Melissa Leo was going to be Mags, which we now see isn’t the case.

  • Emma says:

Lynn Cohen is definately a WAY better mags than i had pictured will reading catching fire, even though i havent seen her in any movies, (not that i know of) from what everyone else has been saying she sounds pretty qualified 🙂

  • Satsuma says:

I’m not familiar with Lynn Cohen’s work, but she certainly looks the part. Agree with Debbie, if Betty White was cast, I think the audience members would have been seeing not “Mags” but “Betty White playing Mags”, and besides, it seemed a lot of people fancasted her (or Dame Maggie) only because they couldn’t think of any other octogenerian actresses.

As for the rumor mill, yes most of the “exclusives” out there have been bogus, but “PSH for Plutarch” and “Jena Malone for Johanna” did turn out to be true. So (though it seems 95% of the fandom will be disappointed), I really am starting to think Sam Claflin will play Finnick. Especially since there haven’t been any other rumors lately.

  • Katie says:

She’s perfect – just like I imagined Mags when reading the book (the silly Betty White fancasting just irritated me). Although, I was really starting to get into that whole theory that Mags is Latina and her “garbled” speech is actually Spanish. I do get the impression Lynn Cohen could speak other languages, though, so I’m wondering where they’re going to go with that…

  • I remember reading Victor’s Village take on THG movie after it came out; they described how Prim crushed their hearts into a thousand tiny pieces. I have a feeling that watching Mags/Lynn Cohen kiss Finnick and walk into the fog is going to have the same effect. Only the hardest heart will have a dry eye after that scene!

  • Also, in the words of a southern belle, “Ya’ll are driving me nuts!” I spent the last twenty minutes of last week’s HG Fireside Chat looking at how many minutes were left in the podcast, thinking, “Surely they will stop talking about the Olympics now and get into the steamy Crackpot theory.” Fifteen, ten, five… nope. I believe in you; I believe in your ability to manage all the topics in the time available. Don’t let me down! 🙂

  • I love her as Mags, she looks super sweet & adorable. Excellent choice.

  • addy says:

omg i just found out i can post stuff on here

  • Amanda T. says:

I wonder how Willow will feel on set when all the actors shes working with (execpt maybe a few) are over the age of 16.

  • Wondering if you guys will discuss the increase of salary for Jennifer Lawrence (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/jennifer-lawrence-scores-10-million-hunger-games-sequel-358636).

  • Satsuma says:

Okay, re the “steamy” Crackpot theory: Wow, I wasn’t expecting that! I do NOT think anything was consummated on the beach, but I have always thought of that scene as describing actual physiological reactions Katniss is having, not just romantic “warm fuzzies”. I never thought of the “lightning strike” to have a possible double meaning, though I think SC meant for there to be an actual weather phenomenon to take place, maybe she had that in the back of her mind. (At least she didn’t mention any earthquakes…)

Anyway, I think the main argument against this theory is that they were on live TV and I really doubt that the same Katniss who was shocked by Johanna’s behavior in the elevator would have let herself get that carried away. That being said, re the clothes, note that this is after their suits have been pretty much burned off by poison fog. Also, the fact that Finnick, of all people, seemed to be rather taken aback by what he saw when he woke up, when you consider what he’s already seen and done, I think suggests that perhaps they did get pretty close to taking things “all the way”.

In any case, I think SC here as well as later in MJ, does do a good job keeping this subtle enough to keep it age-appropriate for the whole YA bracket, from Prim’s age up to Gale’s. I’ve actually seen a lot of discussion as to what really happened right before that “real or not real” scene at the end of MJ, though it seems most people agree that this is when Katniss really did get her “hunger”, er, satisfied.

  • Meg G. says:

Speaking of filming locations, any thoughts on where they’ll shoot the winter scenes? Hope it’s not all artificial snow. Wouldn’t mind them coming to MN to shoot.

  • re: the idea that mags’ “garbled speech” could actually be spanish, i think lynn cohen could absolutely pass off as hispanic as far as looks go. there’s plenty white/caucasian people here in latin america. actually, lynn (particularly in that picture you used as the cover for this episode) reminds me a lot of my late great-grandmother.

that said, as much as i would love to hear some spanish in the movie, i prefer to think mags’ garbled speech was actually just that, garbled speech. i think it serves to emphasize her age (the fact that she’s absolutely, positively not in her prime anymore), and that makes her sacrifice, both in taking annie’s place and in giving herself up to the fog during the quell, all the more poignant.

  • Savanna says:

Ooh, interesting question about the winter scenes…they’ll probably just use movie magic to make that happen! Re: Lynn Cohen, I agree that she could actually pass as a Latina, though we start to get into problematic territory when we have a Caucasian actor portraying a non-Caucasian character (then it really would be a case of whitewashing, yipes).

  • Allisonvt16 says:

I made an interesting observation Today. See I was going on to the capitol pn website, attempting to get into district 4 by saying i was from district 4, i said i was from houston since naturally i asumed that the hunger games adventures was contected somehow. But it said i was in district 7… therefore district 4 is probably in california but it makes sense now…

    • Savanna says:

That’s very interesting! We’re 99.9% sure that TheCapitol.PN assigns districts randomly, though — not based on your actual location.
