Thanks for the thoughtful replies to my question! I actually didn’t get to hear you discuss it live b/c the storm took out my cable modem. But now I have, and I agree with the general consensus that while Gale and Katniss *might* have wound up married if Prim wasn’t reaped, it wouldn’t have been anything near the passionate relationship she winds up having with Peeta. I think the idea that Katniss might have married Gale because he’s the only D12 guy who would have accepted that she didn’t want kids, is very plausible.

To me, one thing SC did NOT leave ambiguous in the books, is that Katniss only feels that passionate “hunger” for Peeta, never for Gale. It doesn’t mean that Katniss wasn’t attracted to Gale at all, he seems to be type most girls would find attractive. But I think that even if Katniss had married Gale, it really would have been a “friends with benefits” type relationship, almost a marriage of convenience, for her.

Also, even if Prim hadn’t been reaped, resulting in the chain of events that made Katniss the Mockingjay, I think it’s quite possible that a rebellion would still have taken place. And then what Crystal said, about Gale really being devoted more to the Cause than Katniss, would have come into play.

      Totally agree!

  • Great discussion! I agree that Gale would be the most likely choice for Katniss to marry years down the road if they did eventually come to a consensus to not have children. I don’t think that it would have been the same kind of marriage or relationship that she had with Peeta, but more like what Satsuma describes as a “friends with benefits” kind of marriage.

Thank you Satsuma for pointing out that Collins describes Katniss’ “hunger” only with Peeta. The best wording I can think of is that “awakening” doesn’t happen for Katniss until those two kisses with Peeta (one in THG and one in CF). Even then it takes time, the whole time of the books until end of Mockingjay for that part of her to be fully opened. I can’t help but quote Song of Solomon, “Do not arouse or awaken love until the time is right.” When I hear Katniss say that she doesn’t want to lose Gale because good hunting partners are hard to find, that doesn’t seem like the right person or the right time!

      Agreed!
