Panelist of the Week: Mary Tuesday 08 May, 2012
To help you all get to know our regular panelists a bit better, we’ll be spotlighting one (or two!) here each week!
This week, we’d like you to meet Mary, a staff member at Down with the Capitol and co-founder of Book Nerds Across America! We’ve never met anyone as passionate about Haymitch as Mary is, and she also scores extra cool points for living in Appalachia (a.k.a. the real-life District 12).
Which is your favorite book in the series?
Mary: My favorite book of the series is Catching Fire. I love every page of it. The main reason I love it is because you can see the relationship between Katniss and Peeta grow, so much. Plus, there is more Haymitch and you can never have enough Haymitch.
What do your friends and family think of your Hunger Games obsession?
Mary: My husband sees my obsession the most and understands my love for Haymitch and why so many call me Mrs. Haymitch. He thinks its fine, just as long as I do not actually “stalk” Woody Harrelson.
Which district would you most like to live in?
Mary: Considering I already live in District 12, I think I am just going to stay here. I love West Virginia very much and the view is breathtaking at times. I like the fact that I live in a city but still have the “small-town” feel.
Which Hunger Games character do you think you are most like?
Mary: In a twisted way, I am most like Haymitch — and not because I like to drink. think when people read Haymitch they only see him as the “drunk,” but he is much more. He truly cares for Katniss and Peeta, he considers them family, and he has great loyalty to District 12. That is like me, in some ways; my family and friends mean the world to me, and I would do anything for them. On top of that, I am very proud to be an American and love my country.
Which two tributes (victors included) would you most want to ally with in the arena?
Mary: This is an easy choice: Katniss and Peeta. They work well together, and they are very trustworthy, smart, and reliable. I would most enjoy being their ally.
If you could ask Suzanne Collins ONE question about the series, what would it be?
Mary: There are so many question that I want to ask, but since I have only one it would be: Who did you base Haymitch off of?
What are some of your interests outside of The Hunger Games?
Mary: Well, I am the host of Haymitch Happy Hour which is a radio program that reviews books (not just the Hunger Games books), and my co-host Flo and I create drinks to go with the books. On top of that, I am the co-founder of Book Nerds Across America with Flo, where we read, review books, do author interviews, and have giveaways. I READ all the time. My Kindle Fire is never far from my hands and is my prized possession.
