'Catching Fire' DVD/Blu-ray Review & Giveaway Thursday 06 March, 2014
Catching Fire comes out on DVD and Blu-ray TOMORROW (March 7). If you haven’t already pre-ordered a copy for yourself, we’re here to help you decide which version to purchase (there are a few different options). We also have a copy to GIVE AWAY to one of you, so please enter our contest down below for a chance to win.
(Major thanks to Lionsgate for providing us with all of these options to review for you!)
Target Exclusive: Target’s exclusive Blu-ray/DVD edition includes 3 discs. The first disc gives you the Blu-ray version of the film and an absolutely awesome 9-part documentary entitled Surviving the Game: Making ‘Catching Fire’. The second disc is the DVD version. Both the Blu-ray and DVD include the option of audio commentary from Francis Lawrence and Nina Jacobson as well as several short (but enjoyable) deleted scenes. Disc 3 is a bonus disc boasting several interesting featurettes: The Alliance, Friend or Foe, and One Vision. It’s worth mentioning that Target’s packaging is quite lovely; the case opens like a little book and each page is “illustrated” with gorgeous images of Katniss, Peeta, Finnick, and Gale. ($22.99 at Target)
Walmart Exclusive: Walmart went all out for this one! Their edition is a 2-movie set containing both Catching Fire and the first film. The disc case comes in exclusive lenticular packaging (an image of Katniss that changes to an image of the mockingjay symbol when you shift the cover). This edition doesn’t come with any special features, but you do get both movies, which is pretty sweet. ($24.96 at Walmart)
Best Buy Exclusive: With Best Buy’s exclusive Blu-ray version, you get to experience the joys of SteelBook packaging. The case is metal (at least partially) and very hard and durable. The cover features a grey and silver-toned image of Katniss and Peeta standing in front of the mockingjay symbol (see image above). Since this is the Blu-ray, you do get the Surviving the Game documentary (plus the audio commentary and deleted scenes, of course). ($22.99 at Best Buy)
It’s worth noting that every version comes with a Digital HD UltraViolet copy of the film as well.
And just in case it wasn’t made apparent in our write-up of each option: The 9-part documentary can only be found on the Blu-ray version of Catching Fire. Even if you just purchase the standard Blu-ray that isn’t exclusive to one of the above stores, you will still get that documentary. But, sadly, the documentary does not come with the DVD. The DVD does come with the audio commentary and deleted scenes, though.
About those deleted scenes: We have to say, we were slightly disappointed when we saw how few there were and how short they were. But beggars can’t be choosers, right? We remember how upset fans were when no deleted scenes were released for The Hunger Games, so we’re certain you’ll love these despite their brevity. The highlights for us were an amusing moment between Katniss and Finnick in the training center (“Finnick Ties the Knot”) and a brief scene in which we get to see Plutarch really start to put his plan into motion (“Switching Envelopes”).
Now on to the giveaway! We have a Catching Fire DVD/Blu-ray combo pack to give away to one lucky winner (thanks again, Lionsgate). If you’d like to see what you’ll be winning, just take a look at the image above. Please enter using the Rafflecopter below (and don’t forget to leave a comment on this post, as that’s required). The contest is open only to residents of the U.S. and Canada and will run through midnight ET on Wednesday, March 12. A random winner will be chosen and contacted via email.
